With the amount of information available surrounding cancer treatment methods, there is no surprise that some of the language used can be confusing to patients. At our Arizona cancer center, we’re often asked to explain the differences between words. One of the most common questions we hear is, “What is the difference between homeopathic and holistic?” While these terms sound similar, they have different meanings, especially as they relate to cancer treatment.
- Homeopathy: Merriam-Webster’s definition of “homeopathy” is “a system for treating illness that uses very small amounts of substances that would in larger amounts produce symptoms of the illness in healthy people.” In medical practice, this can refer to a “treat like with like” method, treating an issue with the source that originally caused it.
- Holistic: The word “holistic” is defined as “relating to or concerned with whole systems rather than individual parts.” In medicine, holistic treatment plans often work to heal not just one part of the body alone, but the entire system in which it exists.
The difference between the 2 terms is that homeopathic treatments are often individual, singular treatments. This single treatment can represent just 1 piece of a greater cancer treatment program. Often, each of the pieces is complementary of others, so that they work to support each other. The entire cancer treatment program can be holistic in nature, meaning that it includes a variety of different methods, each with a unique purpose.
At The EuroMed Foundation, we focus on taking a holistic approach to cancer treatment. This means that we focus on treating the disease, but also the mind, body, and spirit of the patient. Ensuring that all of these are healthy allows the whole body, including the immune system, to work as effectively and productively as possible. While one treatment might focus on attacking the actual cancerous cells, another treatment will work to strengthen the immune system to support the fight and protect the body from potential illness.
We recently produced an e-book that gives an in-depth guide to the alternative cancer treatment options available at The EuroMed Foundation, as well as tips for staying healthy and preventing chronic illness and disease.
