Real Food: What to Eat and Why
by Nina Planck
A successful manager of urban green markets, Planck presents a contrarian view of what constitutes sound nutrition. She urges readers to think back to the kinds of diets that their grandmothers ate, regimens full of foods fresh from farms and from individual purveyors: meats, dairy, and seasonal fruits and vegetables. Planck has a lot to offer about the role of fats in a healthy diet. Although most nutritionists worry about people consuming too much fat, Planck distinguishes good fats from bad, noting that many vital nutrients are absorbed into the body only dissolved in fat. She describes the differences between industrial fats that have been chemically saturated and hydrogenated and those fats that occur naturally in vegetables, fish, and meats, especially lauding the benefits of homemade lard. Planck draws a similar line between natural and industrial soy foods.

Nutrition and Physical Degeneration
by Weston A. Price, DDS
For nearly 10 years, Dr. Weston Price and his wife traveled around the world – to 14 different countries – in search of what traditional cultures knew about diet and health. He investigated some of the most remote areas in the world. He observed high immunity to tuberculosis, zero cancer, and overall excellent health in those groups of people who ate their indigenous foods. He found when these people were introduced to modernized foods, such as white flour, white sugar, refined vegetable oils and canned goods, signs of degeneration quickly became quite evident. Dr. Price documented this ancestral wisdom including hundreds of photos in his book, Nutrition and Physical Degeneration. It still stands today as a landmark investigation into the effects of diet upon health, although it was ignored by the medical establishment of its day which was (and still is) enamored with pharmaceutical drugs.
Seeds of Deception
by Jeffrey M. Smith
This exposé by Jeffrey M. Smith, documents significant health dangers of genetically modified (GM) foods and the intense industry influence and political corruption that allow them on the market. Hailed as the best book on the topic, many believe that the revelations in this book can topple an industry. Increasingly, alternative medicine [physicians are coming to believe that genetically modified food may represent the biggest health challenge mankind has ever faced.
by Jeffrey M. Smith
This book, prepared in collaboration with a team of international scientists, is for anyone wanting to understand GM technology, to learn how to protect themselves, or to share their concerns with others. It is presented in the clear, accessible style that made Jeffrey Smith's Seeds of Deception the world's best-selling book on genetically engineered foods. Sixty-five health risks of the foods that Americans eat every day are presented in easy-to-read two-page spreads. The second half of Genetic Roulette shows how safety assessments on GM crops are not competent to identify the health problems presented in the first half.
Excitotoxins: The Taste That Kills
by Russell L. Blaylock
Neurosurgeon Russell Blaylock wrote a well-researched bombshell – that excitotoxins, substances added to food and beverages and including glutamate (MSG) and aspartate (NutraSweet) – damage nerve cells in the brain, and are particularly dangerous to those at high risk of neurodegenerative diseases. Explains why diet sodas are worse then regular sodas sweetened with high fructose corn syrup. Explains how excitotoxins contribute to obesity, chronic disease, seizures, and the dumbing down of the population.
Lick the Sugar Habit
by Nancy Appleton, PhD
There's the old saying that sugar is poison. Americans each consume more than 150 pounds of sugar and related sweeteners each year. It's pretty easy for it to add up when you consider that there are 17 teaspoons of sugar in a single can of soda. Author Nancy Appleton delineates how sugar overconsumption wreaks havoc with our immune and endocrine systems, fostering chronic diseases, as well as cavities and periodontal disease. Appleton admits that she herself used to be a sugar addict, and suffered from numerous allergies, bronchitis, pneumonia, and even a chest tumor that turned out to be a huge calcium deposit that resulted from her body's inability to process the pounds of sugar she consumed.

Toxic Deception: How the Chemical Industry Manipulates Science, Bends the Law, and Endangers Your Health
by Dan Fagin, Marianne Lavelle
Fagin and other investigative reporters showed how chemical companies keep known health threats on the market. Nearly half the top officials who left the EPA in the last 15 years now work for these companies, which might explain why the industry is essentially responsible for testing the toxic effects of its own chemicals and then reporting the results to the EPA. The authors find numerous discrepancies between the work of industry and that of independent scientists.
